Situated in the tiny village of Verrières, in the heart of rural Sud Vienne, Les Sumacs offers a peaceful retreat, whilst in easy reach of a variety of venues. This gite is ideal for 2 adults or for a family of 4 as it offers a master bedroom upstairs amongst the old beams, with a bedroom downstairs containing 2 single beds. In the main room downstairs one finds the kitchenette, a dining area and comfortable seating area for relaxation or watching television. It also offers WI FI connection. The roomy bathroom and shower includes heated towel rail.
Outside is the well kept private garden with seating area, loungers and BBQ. There is ample parking available.
There is plenty of opportunity to explore the countryside either on foot or bicycle, along the quiet country lanes, with a good variety of wild birds, (look out for the hoopoe or listen for the purr of the turtle dove). A host of invertebrates, including some beautiful species of butterflies and moths, many species of bees and beetles great and small.
In summer wild flowers abound and deer and wild boar reside in the many patches of woodland. One may see hares on occasions either in the fields or hopping along the road. Red squirrels are in residence as are the bats which can be seen regularly at dusk and beyond. Owls are also out and about during this time.
Horses and alpaca reside on the adjoining property offering another source of interest.
Local amenities include in the nearby village of Blanzay, an épicerie, a boulangerie, post office and a delightful restaurant offering delicious food, much of it locally sourced, in a warm and friendly environment.
For more serious shopping try the old town of Civray situated on the Charante, and within 15 mins by car from Verrières. This town offers a selection of shops, bars and restaurants, plus a great outdoor market in the square on Tuesday and Friday mornings where you can purchase many products produced locally, including local cheeses, Charante melons, meats vegetables, fruit and honey.
There are supermarkets on the outskirts of town, and more in adjoining Savigné.
The small ancient town of Charroux is well worth a visit with its high monastery tower dominating the square where you will find a medieval covered marketplace where local folk sell their produce, surrounded by bars restaurants and shops.
Further afield to the South is the town of Ruffec with plenty of shops bars and restaurants plus a street market on Saturdays. Go a few miles further South and you will find the picturesque little town of Fauteuil dominated by a magnificent chateau, also on the Charente, lots of photo opportunities there!
Day trips to Montmorillion, Poitiers or Angouleme are also possible.
Nearer to home there is Le Vielle Cormenier, a museum of farming life, and Le Valle de Sange a well respected zoo specialising in monkeys and primates which you can watch in their large naturalised enclosures.
Many of the surrounding villages organise fete days during the summer, which are great fun to visit.
